Adam Smith-Kipnis AKA Syzygy, was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii where he lived in a grass hut on the beach and ate raw fish and coconuts. Growing up surrounded by so many cultures he was blessed with an appreciation for every musical genre.
Syzygy has a background playing taiko drums, steel drums and singing opera. He began DJing in 1996 in a grungy bar in Waikiki, spinning a mix of old school ska, reggae and rocksteady tracks to an eclectic crowd of punk rockers. Around the same time he attended his first rave and was introduced to electronic music.
After graduating in 2001 with a BA in Music Technology and Social Science he became a roadie for country rock bands touring the US with the likes of Hal Ketchum and Shenandoah. Shortly therafter Syzygy competed in Laptop Battle v1.0 and eventually went on the West Coast Laptop Battle tour with Zapan, DJN, Kris Moon and others. Currently Syzygy supports his Laptop Battle Habit by making sounds for video games. The last title he was credited on was Evil Dead:Regeneration (PS2, XBox, PC). He's currently working on an unannounced next gen console title.
When asked about his music Syzygy replies, "Go away! I'm mixing! Oh wait, you're from Fourthcity... Okay I can spare a minute to talk about myself. Listen punk, there are a few things you should know about my music. I take familiar sounds and HEY GET YOUR BEER OFF MY TURNTABLE!" Oops! Sorry about that Syzygy. "Anyway, as I was saying, I take familiar sounds and get people to listen to them in a whole new way. I introduce to my audiences to new music and get them dancing to styles that they'd never appreciated before. For example, I'll mix techno with R&B, going into reggae and then electro, opera, downtempo, hip-hop, glitch pop..." At this point Syzygy went on a five minute rant listing almost every genre he could think of. We pretended to be interested and then we saw all these hella hot girls on the dancefloor so we left to go dance with them.
